News of Game Boy games on the Nintendo Switch is always good news, even if using the Switch in handheld and docked mode doesn’t quite feel right. After all, the Nintendo Game Boy was a completely different form factor.

Four new Game Boy games can now be added thanks to Switch Online, and you won’t need to worry about the battery running out.

What are the latest Game Boy games on Switch Online?

This month, the four new additions to Switch Online’s retro collection are these four Nintendo Game Boy titles:

  • Survival Kids (GB and GBC, 1999)
  • Gradius: The Interstellar Assault (1991)
  • Kirby’s Star Stacker (1997)
  • The Sword of Hope (1989)

As you can see two of these are from long running franchise series. I’m not sure how many games there are featuring Kirby but the Gradius series ran from 1985 to 2011 and had a number of spinoffs. The spiritual successor to Scramble, and set alongside Salamander, the Gradius games had two Nintendo Game Boy exclusives. First came Nemesis (also confusingly known as Gradius) and after that, Gradius: The Interstellar Assault.

Here’s how the new additions were announced:

I might try these out – how about you?

Not far from where I type this are an original Game Boy awaiting a new glass display and a Game Boy Color. Neither gets an awful lot of action these days, although I am planning to upgrade the GBC for my wife’s birthday later this year. (Although at the speed I move, she’ll end up with wine and chocolates.)

I was more of a fan of colour portable gaming systems as a kid. The Atari Lynx was my big wish, but as my sister had a SEGA Game Gear, I had to put up with that. (And I did, buying two games for it.) The battery life wasn’t as good as it was on the Game Boy, of course, but as the owner of a 16-bit computer, it was the graphics that interested me.

You can find these titles with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Simply look for the Game Boy app on your Switch. For Nintendo 64 games like last week’s Killer Instinct Gold, you’ll need the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
