Crazy-looking action platformer Bomcat is coming to Steam, playing homage to multiple retro classics like Donkey Kong.

A new 80s-style platformer is out on Steam tomorrow, October 1st. Bomcat owes a heavy debt to some notable classics, and features a cat and a bomb factory. The name immediately evokes Bombjack, although that particular title is not listed as a target of the game’s homage.

The synopsis reads as follows:

BOMCAT is a side-view platformer that pays homage to arcade classics of the 1980s such as Donkey Kong, Wrecking Crew, and Crazy Climber. Players take control of a tough little blue cat infiltrating a bomb factory to rescue a captured lady. Use bombs to destroy terminals, disable the boss’s shield, and clear each stage by driving the alien menace away.

Bomcat trailer for Steam

The trailer demonstrates a game that looks like a lot of fun.

The game’s main features are listed:

  • Pixel-perfect visuals with a fixed internal resolution
  • Lively and fluid dot-animation sprites
  • Old-school stage-clear progression with unique gimmicks in every level
  • Retro-sounding music inspired by 1980s sound hardware
  • Relive the excitement of dropping a coin into an arcade cabinet and jumping into action!

This retro-style pixel art fixed-screen platformer is intended only for Windows, rather than SteamOS/Linux, although that will probably change over time. You can order Bomcat now on Steam, and learn more from the website at tanzigames.com.
