At last week’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Square Enix unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. This new title directly follows last year’s well-received Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

This upcoming release includes full remakes of both Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II. Players will have the opportunity to experience these foundational RPGs for the first time on current gen systems, with a planned release in 2025.

The new trailer offered the first look at gameplay, showcasing players controlling the descendants of Erdrick, the legendary hero central to these titles. As Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is set chronologically before the events of Dragon Quest III, players can continue the overarching narrative of the Erdrick Trilogy.

What’s going on with the graphics in the Dragon Quest remake?

A close look at the video reveals a blend of HD-2D pixel art characters with 3D environments and modern high-definition visual effects. Now, does this aesthetic work? Well, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake marks the sixth game to utilize this distinctive visual approach, so someone is enjoying it.
