The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming, and with it will be support for Nintendo GameCube titles in the NSO subscription.

[UPDATED with video of GameCube titles]

As you have probably heard, the Nintendo Switch 2 has launched, with a price of $449.99 in the United States and £395.95 in the UK, with orders opening on April 8th for a June 25th shipment. There is also the option to get the new Mario Kart World bundle, costing $499.99 or £429.99. In the box you get:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Joy-Con 2 controllers (L+R)
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • Joy-Con 2 Straps
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
  • USB-C Charging Cable

You’ve also got 256GB of storage, a fan-cooled dock, adjustable kickstand, full compatibility with Nintendo Switch carts, and — my favourite — magnetically-attached controllers that also work as mouses.

What you might have missed, however, is how the successor to the Nintendo Switch will arrive with a new component to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack — Nintendo GameCube titles!

Nintendo GameCube on the Switch 2

This has been rumoured for a while, and gained traction over the past few days. Getting confirmation at the Switch 2 Direct event has been pretty good news.

Using a Nintendo Switch 2 with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership will unlock access to Nintendo GameCube titles. These will sport clearer image quality and a higher video resolution than when originally released.

Kicking off the lineup are  F-Zero GXThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and SOULCALIBUR II. Other titles will be released, probably monthly as they are currently for NSO subscribers.

In addition, a new wireless Nintendo GameCube controller is set to be available, launching initially as an exclusive to the eShop, for anyone ordering the Nintendo Switch 2.

Of course, this is a great announcement, and by adding GameCube support, Nintendo has cemented the Switch 2 as a continuation of the unrivalled retro gaming experience it brought us in the first Switch.
