If you’re a fan of curated retro game cartridges for British designed consoles, then you won’t want to miss the next Evercade showcase.
Scheduled for Thursday, May 29th, 2025 at 8PM BST (3pm EST/12pm PST), the event is expected to reveal some upcoming carts in the Evercade collection. As you may know, Evercade carts are compatible across all current consoles, from the Evercade EXP and Evercade VS through to the Super Pocket handhelds and the Evercade Alpha bar-tops.
Five years since the original Evercade
Incidentally, this week coincides with the 5th anniversary of the original Evercade console. I remember when I heard news of the handheld, probably from a press release. The idea of a cartridge-based retro gaming system seemed utterly wonderful. Back then, we’d had the NES mini and the C64 mini and a few other mini consoles, but the Evercade represented something different.
This thing had physical media. Cartridge collections, with instructions, in plastic cases, just like the old days. Here’s the release trailer from 2020.
Incredibly, we’re now half a decade on, so the Evercade can definitely be considered a success. While the original handheld no longer receives updates, it remains vital to the success of the brand. Its controls weren’t perfect, but everything wrong with the original was revised in the Evercade EXP version. The platform has built on its failures and successes over the years, and really it is no surprise that it now essentially has four form factors.
Remember: each of the Evercade devices you can buy today is compatible with the same cartridges. That makes it unique, not just in retro gaming, but in the entire history of console gaming!
Any clues to new carts at the Evercade showcase?
Unfortunately, we’re completely in the dark as to what will be unveiled at the event. It’s not unfair to expect new home computer-based collections (Spectrum/C64/Amiga, etc.), and a new collection of indie games is almost inevitable given how the retro scene is represented by such developers.
