The Darius-like R-Type Delta is the sequel you forgot, but it’s coming back later this year for current gen systems.
One of the greatest shoot ’em ups of the 1980s was R-Type, which was so successful it spawned several sequels. One of them is 1998’s R-Type Delta for the original PlayStation, is heading back in a new “HD Boosted” format.
As with the original, R-Type Delta was developed by IREM, and is now being reissued by Clear River Games, who have been involved in several similar re-releases over the past few years.
Here is the game’s synopsis:
The year is 2163, and the badly damaged R-9A Arrowhead has just returned to earth after defeating the Bydo Empire, and is recovered by the battle cruiser, Croque Monsieur. Peace doesn’t last for long though, because one year later, deadly objects begin to fall from the sky. Control is lost over the deadly Moritz-G orbiting annihilation platform, and a city is destroyed. Its advanced defence systems make it almost impossible to approach….but the military responds by deploying the R9all Delta, a prototype ship that is the last hope for humanity. This desperate battle is where R-Type Delta HD Boosted begins

I reckon you probably want to check out the trailer.
I don’t know about you, but I’m getting serious G-Darius vibes from this. Which should come as no surprise as the games were competitors and when both were originally released in 1998. But while G-Darius was originally an arcade game (ported to the PlayStation the year after release), R-Type Delta was never released in arcades.
After all, in the late 1990s, arcades were all about 3D polygon fighting and sports games. You can see some of that influence in the graphic choices of R-Type Delta, which uses a clear 3D (or 2.5D if you prefer) approach.
When can you get the game?
R-Type Delta HD Boosted is expected to arrive later in 2025. A digital release is expected on digitally on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. In addition, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 owners can expect a physical release of this 27-year-old shmup masterpiece.
