Those amazing people at GOG have brought us another way to make playing old games easier, with One-click Mods.

Many classic games, particularly from the PC gaming era of the late 1990s, supported modifications. DOOM, for example, had a whole host of custom WAD files available, the product of gamers pushing the game to its limits with new maps and enemies.

But installing mods on old games isn’t easy, particularly when the classic title concerned is running in an emulated or virtual environment.

This is where One-click Mods comes in.

What is GOG One-click Mods?

Described as “pre-packed, pre-tested, and ready to go” the GOG One-click Mods are curated, premium mods that are packed with supported games. The aim is to make it simple to play the mods, ensuring that classic games can be fully enjoyed, way beyond the development teams’ expectations.

It’s yet another preservation project from GOG, which is already going great guns with its Good Old Games project. (This is where old games are nominated for re-release, and the GOG team tracks down the rights to make it happen.)

GOG One-click Mods is useful, too. After all, installing mods isn’t all that easy in some cases. Where there is no easy menu option to make it happen, a bit of hacking around in the program directory is typically required. Some people prefer not to do that, and easily installable mods means they can be played without risking deleting an important file.

Here’s how the One-click Mods program was announced:

Which games on GOG can be easily modded?

So far, the following titles support one One-click Mods:

  • Heroes of Might and Magic III: Horn of the Abyss
  • DOOM 3: Phobos
  • Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines: Unofficial Patch
  • Fallout: London One-click Edition

Meanwhile, another title is slated to join the One-click Mods library later this year, The Elder Scrolls: Skyblivion

if for some reason you’re not already using GOG for your retro games library, now is a good time to start. Check their Mods page to learn more.
