GamerCard is based on the Raspberry Pi Zero form factor and has been designed by British computing royalty.

No, you read that right: designed for supermarket hooks by Grant Sinclair, nephew of inventor Sir Clive, this is a Raspberry Pi-equipped portable gaming unit.

It looks amazing!

This has really got my attention. Imagine an affordable handheld, capable of playing more than the usual retro games, that comes pre-installed with two titles. Then, consider a compact, pocket-sized console — more so than an Evercade Super Pocket — that you can pick up for just £125, with a high quality display and flat controllers.

You just pictured the GamerCard, a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W-based handheld that has been conceived by a Mr Grant Sinclair. As the nephew of the founder of Sinclair, Grant has some big shoes to fill. The GamerCard is his second notable project, following the IRIS eTrike, an electric-powered enclosed tricycle that has drawn obvious comparisons with Sir Clive’s C5.

A look at the GamerCard

Here’s the GamerCard trailer:

So, that’s a 64-bit compact computer, rechargeable battery, and hi-res (254 PPI) 4-inch square IPS screen sandwiched into a slimline case with Nintendo Switch indie titles Bloo Kid 2 and AstroBlaze DX both preinstalled.

This is happening!

Look, you can tell I’m excited. I’ve used tons of Raspberry Pi-based games systems over the years, from my own creations to things like the RetroFlag GPi. None of them look as good as this, though.

At a time when massive game companies are closing, Microsoft is seemingly abandoning Xbox gaming as a hardware brand, and indies are enjoying a renaissance, I think the GamerCard could play a part.

So, it doesn’t matter if I’m excited. What’s important is: are you? Do you think this device could really be found in supermarkets, or game stores, just hanging on the shelves (maybe with a security tag)?

I’m hoping to bring some more information about this handheld to you soon. Until then, you can learn more on the GamerCard listing page.
