R-Type Delta — also known as R-Type Δ — is back with a new high definition graphics release, 27 years after its original PlayStation release.

Coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, and PC (Steam) from November 20, 2025, the new R-Type Delta HD Boosted is getting both physical and digital release.

The original 1998 game was a challenging 2.5D shooter, but received strong reviews on PlayStation, before being reissued on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in 2009. This new edition has updated HD visuals, a new opening movie, and a remixed soundtrack, alongside the quality-of-life features typicaly of a reissue like this.

R-Type Delta synopsis

How does R-Type Delta fit into the R-Type series? It is the third sequel, sitting fourth in the series.

In the year 2163, having triumphed over the Bydo Empire, the R9 was recovered and stored within a space fortress orbiting Earth. Humanity breathed a collective sigh of relief, but this was short-lived when in 2164 unidentified objects fell from the sky, followed electronic weapons systems running amok, and culminating in an ‘annihilation unit’ stored alongside the R9 suddenly going berserk, descending to Earth and beginning a wave of destruction. To bring the situation under control, the prototype test unit “R9 Delta” is deployed—marking the beginning of a new battle against the Bydo.

With smooth 60fps performance, the option to adjust screen size, and multiple difficulty settings, this release also includes a practice mode. You can get a good look at how the new graphics improve on the PlayStation original with the option to switch between original and HD graphics, R-Type Delta HD Boosted also features a refreshed soundtrack, with newly-arranged compositions from Masahiko Ishida (R-Type II), alongside USP (original R-Type Delta) and Chris Hülsbeck (R-Type for C64 and Amiga, Turrican, many others).
