A Kickstarter for the Vectrex Mini is expected to launch in September, giving everyone the chance to own a surprising mini console.
Short-lived vertical display console the Vectrex has a bit of a legendary status, so seeing that the rumours of a “mini” console revival coming to fruition at Gamescom has come has a bit of a surprise.
According to the Vectrex website, the original 1982 console is being recreated with a black plastic vertical display and some preinstalled games. A French team is behind the project, which seeks to revive the collection of classic titles that were available for the console before it was cancelled in 1984, a consequence of the famous video games crash (that had no significant effect in the UK and Europe.)
What do we know about the Vectrex Mini?
So far, details are scant. From the website and posts on X (formerly Twitter) we can discern that it has:
- An AMOLED display (source)
- 12 built-in games (source)
- Games can be added
- Priced at €150 (source)
- 6-8 inches tall
This is a great option for anyone interested in the classic Vectrex games or wishing to develop for the platform. Existing units of the original Vectrex console typically sell on eBay for around £500, so an affordable alternative is pretty desirable.
