The new Simon the Sorcerer Origins game is almost with us, following news of the 90s video game character’s return in 2024. Chris Barrie is back voicing the character, too…
Point-and-click adventures were everywhere in the early ‘90s, but one I never got around to playing was Simon the Sorcerer. It had a good reputation: a teenage wizard with a sarcastic streak, puzzles to untangle, and a fantasy world that didn’t take itself too seriously. As someone who was a massive Blackadder fan, it’s weird that I missed out on it.
As announced in early 2024, Simon is making a return in Simon the Sorcerer Origins, which lands on 28 October 2025 for PC, Mac, Linux, and just about every current console.
What’s new in Simon the Sorcerer Origins?
This isn’t a remaster of the 1993 original. Instead, it’s an origin story with fresh, hand-drawn art and new puzzles. Chris Barrie is back as Simon’s English voice (with Erik Borner also returning to reprise the German language version), and the game comes with a new soundtrack by Mason Fischer.
(For reasons that remain to be seen, Rick Astley also makes an appearance. Your guess is as good as mine.)
The game is already up for pre-order on Steam, the Nintendo eShop, and the Xbox Store, with PlayStation following soon. There are two editions — a standard release and a deluxe version with an artbook and soundtrack. Pre-ordering either gets you a DLC pack that lets you swap the in-game music for the original ‘90s score.
Simon the Sorcerer is back!
Adventure fans who grew up with Simon get a new chapter to explore, while people like me — who missed the series first time round — get a convenient way in without wrestling with DOSBox.
And as you should know by now, I’m a big fan of making retro gaming as simple as possible.
Whether Origins captures the humour and spark that made the original so well-regarded remains to be seen, but at least Simon’s back in the spotlight where he belongs.
