It’s been a few months since the original announcement, but new images for the game have dropped just ahead of launch and are a sharp reminder that this is one of the biggest retro remakes of the year. SQUARE ENIX is finally bringing us the end of the Erdrick Trilogy saga with DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake, which is set to launch next week on October 30, 2025!
This package combines full remakes of the first two groundbreaking DRAGON QUEST games, bringing them to life in that gorgeous, vibrant HD-2D style pioneered by Octopath Traveler.
The narrative finally comes full circle
This release is key for fans because these two games chronologically take place after the critically acclaimed DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake (which launched last year). If you played that game and loved the ending, this is the narrative payoff you’ve been waiting for.
You take control of the descendants of Erdrick, the legendary hero established in DQ III, continuing the massive, sprawling story. It’s a huge moment for the series, and it’s coming to every modern platform: Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.
Key things to note:
- Ultimate Conclusion: This isn’t just a simple graphical facelift; the developers are promising never-before-seen story content and gameplay updates, along with a refined battle system and numerous quality-of-life improvements.
- The Full Trilogy: Newcomers can now grab the digital-only DRAGON QUEST HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection for $99.99, which bundles DQ I & II with the previously released DQ III—a definitive way to experience the whole saga.
Collector’s editions and cosmetic bonuses
If you’re into physical media and collector items (which I know many of us are), there’s a hefty Collector’s Edition coming for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X for $149.99.
This edition includes the physical game, but also some seriously fun nostalgia bait:
- Character & Monster Blocks Complete Set: Featuring six characters, a dog, two boss monsters, and the logo.
- The Outstanding Outfit Kit: In-game items like the Ring of Strength, Slime Earrings, and the Mad Cap.
Plus, those who own the full trilogy can unlock fun cosmetic suits (Dog Suit for DQ I and Cat Suit for DQ II).
With the visual details finally being shared and the launch just around the corner, this is a must-have for any fan of classic JRPGs and the beautiful HD-2D art style.
