Apogee’s other 90s run-and-gun is back — and this time it’s getting the full deluxe treatment. BioMenace Remastered has been officially unveiled for GOG, giving the 1993 DOS blaster a modern overhaul complete with enhanced graphics, gameplay refinements, and a completely new Episode 4.

If you never played the original (and honestly, many of us missed it the first time around), BioMenace was a side-scrolling action-platformer built on the Commander Keen engine. It occupies the same chunky, colourful, pre-Duke Nukem 3D era of Apogee history — think early Duke Nukem with mutants, monster labs, and plenty of pixel explosions.

What’s new in BioMenace Remastered?

Rigel Gameworks — led by Nikolai “lethal_guitar” Wuttke-Hohendorf, the developer behind Duke Nukem 1+2 Remastered for Evercade — is rebuilding the game with a hefty list of improvements:

  • Enhanced graphics, widescreen support, 60fps+ scrolling, parallax backgrounds
  • Modern HUD/UI
  • Toggle between original and remastered graphics at any time
  • Controller support
  • Rebalanced difficulty and gameplay tweaks
  • New mechanics such as weapon/grenade swapping, infinite lives option, and a kill-streak system
  • Mid-level and quick saves
  • Achievements and leaderboards
  • Completion and stats tracking
  • Full level editor
  • Includes Episodes 1–3 plus a brand-new Episode 4

The remaster also includes Bobby Prince’s original soundtrack, along with new AdLib-style music by Myrgharok.

A reveal trailer — created by Bart “Dosgamert” Remmers — shows off both the original 1993 build and the updated visuals, with the disclaimer that the footage is still work-in-progress.

A surprise comeback for a forgotten Apogee relic

While it never had the cultural footprint of Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, or Wolfenstein, BioMenace has developed a quiet cult following for its mutant-busting action and bright 90s charm. A remaster with fresh content and a level editor gives it a chance to shine again — possibly for the first time for many players.

BioMenace Remastered is available to wishlist now on GOG.
