The Abxylute M4 snap-on mobile controller has officially completed its Kickstarter campaign, and it’s shaping up to be one of the more interesting mobile gaming accessories to emerge in recent years — particularly for players who want something compact, pocketable, and low-commitment.

Rather than turning your phone into a full-on pseudo handheld console, the M4 takes a different approach. It’s a magnetic, snap-on controller that attaches to the back of your phone, ready to flip around and use when needed. There’s no telescopic grip, no bulky frame, and no attempt to mimic a Switch or PS Vita-style device. Instead, the focus here is on quick, casual play.

The controller packs a familiar layout — dual analogue sticks, a D-pad, ABXY face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, and clickable L3/R3 — all connected via Bluetooth. Battery life is rated at around 12 hours, and it supports iOS, Android, PC, emulation setups, and cloud gaming services. For iPhones with MagSafe, it snaps straight on; other phones can use an included magnetic ring.

I’ve tried a fair few mobile controllers over the years, including larger clamp-style designs like the Acer Nitro NGR400. While those can work well, they often feel like overkill — turning a phone into something you need a bag or case for. The M4 looks more appealing because it doesn’t demand that kind of commitment. You can genuinely carry it in a pocket, clip it on when the mood strikes, and put it away again just as easily.

That design choice also makes it feel better suited to casual gaming sessions, retro emulation, or cloud play on the go, rather than marathon sessions that require a full handheld-style grip.

The Kickstarter campaign comfortably exceeded its funding goal, unlocking multiple colour options along the way, and Abxylute has now moved the controller to standard pre-orders via its website. Shipping is expected in early 2026.

It’s still early days, but the Abxylute M4 stands out by not trying to replace a handheld console — just by making mobile gaming a bit more tactile, and a lot more convenient. Learn more on the abxylute website, and you can still back the Kickstarter.
