A movie starring ToeJam and Earl is reportedly in production at Amazon Studios. And no, I can’t believe it either!
This announcement marks the latest in a long line of video game to movie adaptations, but ToeJam & Earl is certainly the most niche.
ToeJam & Earl debuted on the SEGA Genesis (MegaDrive) in 1991. The game follows ToeJam and Earl, a rapping alien duo, as they rush to retrieve parts of their wrecked spaceship and escape planet Earth.
The game was well-received by critics and fans, although SEGA initially deemed it a failure due to poor sales. That ‘failure’ was short-lived as ToeJam and Earl went on to become one of Sega’s exclusive franchises.

Three decades later, The funky duo are going strong with their latest adventure, 2019’s ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove! The release followed a successful Kickstarter campaign and is available on everything from the Nintendo Switch to Steam.
Videogame/movie crossovers used to be a recipe for disaster with stinkers like Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, ensuring we don’t get another movie from that series for a while!
More recently, filmmakers seem keen to buck that trend with movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu raking in hundreds of millions.
There are so many creative ways ToeJam & Earl could be used to make an unforgettable movie, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store.
