Sega’s Sonic Cosmo Fighter is a rare arcade game that saw a very limited release in Japan. The game is a vertical 2D shooter where you control a spaceship piloted by the Blue Blur himself as he battles Dr. Robotnik’s mechanical monstrosities. The arcade cabinet has a spaceship exterior and a themed control panel, including a chunky joystick and a lever to adjust your speed.

You can complete Sonic Cosmo Fighter within a few short minutes, and most players have only experienced it with the Japanese voiceover… Until now!

Twitter user IAMAMAZING100 owns an incredibly rare English version of the arcade unit that was originally housed at Sega World in Sydney. They have dumped the files online, and they are now available to download. If you’re interested in the arcade cabinet itself, IAMAMAZING100 has posted plenty of images on their Twitter.

MAME has very recently updated to support the English version of Sega Sonic Cosmo Fighter, so everything should run without any issues. Even if you don’t plan on playing it yourself, I recommend watching a full playthrough. For such a short game, Sonic and Robotnik are very talkative, and it’s worth checking out just to hear Sonic’s voice, as it’s the stuff of legend!
