Rotating-screen tank shooter Assault Plus is now avalailable on Nintendo Switch and PS4 thanks to the Arcade Archives.
In 1988, NAMCO (now Bandai Namco Entertainment) released Assault Plus, a unique shooter that put players in control of a powerful tank. The game’s distinctive control scheme, using separate controls for the left and right treads, offered a fresh take on the genre.
What really strikes you with this game and its predecessor, Assault, is the way the screen rotates as you turn. While you expect it to be a standard move left-right to navigate terrain experience, the landscape and enemies in Assault Plus pivot around your tank as you move. Couple this with the tread-focused tank-driving controls, and you’ve got quite the memorable title.
Arcade Archives classics library expands
The Arcade Archives series is dedicated to faithfully reproducing classic arcade masterpieces. Assault Plus is no exception. Players can customize various game settings, such as difficulty, and even replicate the look and feel of old arcade displays. For those with a competitive spirit, the game also features online leaderboards, allowing players from around the world to compete for the highest score.
As noted, Assault Plus will be available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Don’t forget that the Arcade Archives 2 has been announced, which will kick off with the first console release of Ridge Racer on the Nintendo Switch 2.
