Obscure SNK shooter Bermuda Triangle gets a modern reissue in Arcade Archives
Originally released by SNK in 1987, Bermuda Triangle is a vertical-scrolling shoot-’em-up with a delightfully mad sci-fi premise.
You pilot the time-space battleship ZIG, fight mysterious invaders, and repeatedly get flung through different historical eras — from the present day back into the distant past. Each time period brings new enemies, hazards and power-ups, and the central loop is pure arcade: power up your ship, survive waves of foes, and chase high scores.
What is Bermuda Triangle?
Bermuda Triangle is one of those slightly obscure SNK titles that never quite reached the fame of its later Neo-Geo output — which makes it a neat curiosity for collectors and shmup fans. It’s certainly one that passed me by, although I think I have seen it on a modern custom arcade running off a PC or Raspberry Pi.
The title shows SNK experimenting with more adventurous premises in the late ’80s, and Arcade Archives’ release gives players an easy, preserved way to experience that slice of arcade history without hunting down rare boards or cabinets.
What the Arcade Archives release includes
Hamster’s Arcade Archives version faithfully reproduces the original arcade experience while adding modern comforts:
- Authentic arcade PCB emulation and display options
- Adjustable difficulty and game settings
- CRT-style display filters to recreate cabinet atmosphere
- Online leaderboards so high-score chasers can compare scores globally
- Save states and other modern conveniences
Different consoles will have different features, however. The record-breaking Arcade Archives has two strands: PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, and Arcade Archives 2 for the PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. This means that extended quality of life features are available on the more recent consoles.
The Arcade Archives port is available now on the usual modern console storefronts. If you enjoy vertical shooters or like to dig into off-beat arcade oddities, this one’s worth a look.
Check out the Bermuda Triangle page on the Arcade Archives website for more details and storefront links.
