Somehow — and I genuinely can’t explain this — I completely missed Blood in the 90s. In 1997 I was clearly too busy pushing tiny sprites around strategy maps to notice that an undead cowboy named Caleb was out there delivering a Lovecraftian splatterfest that feels like it was engineered in a lab for teenage me.
But hey, better late than never. Nightdive Studios has unleashed Blood: Refreshed Supply, a definitive remaster of the cult DOS shooter, and this time it’s on pretty much every platform imaginable. PC (Steam, GOG, and Epic Games, too), PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch — you name it, Caleb’s dragging his dusty ribcage onto it.
Note that the gory content makes this a title for mature gamers, though…
The goriest FPS you maybe forgot existed
Originally developed by Monolith Productions, Blood is one of those 90s shooters that somehow sits between “legendary” and “we never talk about it enough.” It’s dark, funny, fast, and absolutely drenched in gibs. Think DOOM, but with more satanic chanting, more attitude, and a protagonist who sounds like he’s been chain-smoking in a crypt for 200 years.
Nightdive remastered it once before with Fresh Supply in 2019, but Refreshed Supply aims to be the definitive version. That includes:
- Up to 4K, 120fps visuals
- Split-screen multiplayer
- Eight-player online co-op and PvP
- A new Vault stuffed with cut content and behind-the-scenes goodies
- Expanded modding support
- Proper controller support
- And yes — Bloodbath mode is back
It’s also the first time the game has ever hit consoles, which feels wild considering how many other 90s shooters have got glossy re-releases already.
Caleb’s revenge (with extra chapters)
Blood’s story is gloriously old-school horror pulp: Caleb, an undead gunslinger and former servant of a dark god, rises from his grave to commit righteous demon-slaying revenge. There are 42 original levels packed with cultists, gargoyles, hellhounds, zombies, and all the other creatures that decorated metal band t-shirts in the late 90s.
On top of the original campaign and the Plasma Pak and Cryptic Passage expansions, Nightdive has added two huge new mission packs:
Marrow — available today
- Two episodes
- 24 brand-new levels
- Focus on horror atmosphere
- Full single-player experience with optional co-op
- New soundtrack from a multi-composer team
Death Wish — arriving Q1 2026
- Four episodes
- 48 upgraded and new levels
- Co-op compatible
- New music from Noelle Amelie Aman and Sjellos
Basically: this isn’t a “slap on a filter and call it a remaster” situation. This is a full-on buffet of blood-soaked nostalgia.
A perfect time to rediscover a classic (or discover it for the first time)
If you’re like me and somehow missed Blood despite being the exact target demographic for hyperviolent 90s shooters, this feels like the perfect entry point. And if you did play it back then? Well, you already know why people still talk about Caleb like he’s a cult hero.
Blood: Refreshed Supply is out now on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic), PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch for $29.99. A Nintendo Switch 2 version lands in early 2026.
Time to finally meet the gunslinging corpse I should’ve known 28 years ago.
