R-Type DX: Music Encore is a new take on the Game Boy Advanced edition of the classic side-scrolling shooter, coming soon.

It seems like we’re getting a new R-Type release every other month these days, so what makes R-Type DX: Music Encore any different to previous reissues?

Well, this time the Nintendo Game Boy Advance edition is being re-released through Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series marketplaces, with the first full implementation of the soundtrack for the “Ultimate Challenge” stage. Usually, ports don’t include this, so it’s a notable inclusion.

“Ultimate Challenge” features the very first full soundtrack implementation.
Even in places where the original reused common tracks, brand-new stage-specific music faithful to the arcade has been added. Each stage can now be played with the same music structure as the arcade version.

The music is composed by WASi303, a composer well-versed in retro game sound. Making full use of actual handheld hardware sound chips, it delivers an authentic resonance true to the era, while still offering a fresh new experience!

City Connection are behind this release, and are taking the game to the Tokyo Games Show, which is already in full swing. There’s a playable demo, but of more interest to anyone who can find the feeds might be the special talk on Saturday, the event’s public day, where R-Type Delta: HD Boosted, R-Type DX: Music Encore, and R-Type Tactics I・II Cosmos will be discussed with guests Kazuma Kujo and Hiroya Kita.

No firm date for the release of R-Type DX: Music Encore is yet available, but we’re expecting it later this year. More details can be found on the Steam page.
