Could Goldeneye 007 Save the N64 on Switch Online?

Classic Nintendo 64 title GoldenEye 007 has been cleared of it 24-year ban for sale in Germany.

The release of Nintendo 64 games on Switch Online has been a bit of a disaster but this cloud could have a silver lining. Could GoldenEye 007 appear on Switch Online and wipe the collective memory?

Upon release the game – based on the first of the Pierce Brosnan starring Bond movies – was a success almost worldwide. However, it was banned in Germany like many other first-person shooters due to the nature of the game and realistic firearms technology featured therein.

With the announcement that the ban on the game is being lifted, many retro gaming fans are speculating that the title may finally be revived on the Nintendo switch.

An updated version of GoldenEye 007 was released on the Nintendo Wii in 2010 and featured the likeness of then-current James Bond Daniel Craig. While an adequate shooter, it sadly missed some of the charm of the original N64 game.

GoldenEye 64 was also ported to Xbox Live. However this release was never completed and remained little more than a rumour until it was leaked in early 2021. You can run GoldenEye in the Xenia Xbox 360 emulator on desktop computers.

If anything can save the shoddy release of Nintendo 64 games on the Nintendo Switch it is the return of GoldenEye 007. But there remains the possibility that lifting the ban is purely a coincidence. But if the N64 on Switch Online needs saving, Bond is surely up to the job.
