Just a few days after we shared a new 3D “Quake-like” engine for Spectrums comes another one, this time providing a glimpse of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, on an 8-bit computer.
Created in 2022 by Alone Coder and Dragons’ Lord, a 128k Spectrum is the last place you would expect to find a segment of any Elite Dangerous landscape. Yet here we are, the Ruins of the Guadians, running on a 1985 ZX Spectrum 128k model.
This is made possible by the Info Guide 3D engine, with the data loading from a DivMMC flash device, according to the notes accompanying the video.
Explore “Ruins of the Guardians” from “Elite Dangerous: Odyssey” on your ZX Spectrum. We have set a standard 3,5 MHz 1985 ZX Spectrum 128k model 6K to run the new 2022 Z80 Info Guide 3D engine.
An engine that is recommended to run at 14 MHz, but we check out how well it runs on an old 3,5 MHz machine from 1985. This is a fully playable engine / demo game. Hold down D + L when loading to activate play mode. Play with W, A, S, D, Q, E, O, P.
The engine was loaded from a DivMMC device and for your pleasure we have captured both RGB and RF antenna output. (you’ll see both in the video – ed)
As if the graphics weren’t stunning enough (says the C64 and Amiga fan), the music is superb. You can download this 3D engine/demo game from the ZX Demos site.
