Scottish studio Hunted Cow Games has announced Fallen Sword II, a new RPG set in the world of its long-running browser MMORPG Fallen Sword. The game is scheduled to launch in Q3 2026 on PC and mobile, with a Steam wishlist now live.
The announcement coincides with the 20th anniversary of the original Fallen Sword, which launched back in December 2006 and quietly became one of the most enduring browser-based MMORPGs of its era.
A browser-era success story
Originally developed in a small office in Elgin, Scotland, Fallen Sword found rapid success in the mid-2000s, attracting more than 250,000 players within three months and passing one million registered users in its first year. Built around old-school, MUD-inspired mechanics, deep crafting systems, and a strong emphasis on community events and guild play, it managed to retain a dedicated player base long after most browser MMOs faded away.
Nearly two decades on, the original game is still active, with over three million registered players, hundreds of guilds, and a community that includes veterans who have been playing for more than 15 years.
According to Hunted Cow, Fallen Sword II is intended as a spiritual successor, rather than a straight reboot, carrying forward the identity of the original while modernising how it’s played.
Returning to Erildath
Fallen Sword II takes place once again in Erildath, combining familiar RPG systems with updated visuals and cross-platform play between PC and mobile devices.
Core features confirmed so far include:
- Turn-based combat, with magic, elemental weapons, and summoned allies
- Dungeon-style encounters known as Gauntlets, featuring traps, bosses, and rare loot
- Six playable class paths: Warrior, Mage, Rogue, Guardian, Cleric, and Ranger
- Crafting, alchemy, and equipment enhancement through systems like the Gemforge
- Large-scale guild-based content, including cooperative battles against world-threatening Titans
Narratively, players once again take on the role of a chosen hero, selected by the gods to confront the ancient evil Imaar, echoing the mythic structure of the original game.
A modern sequel, not a replacement
Hunted Cow has been careful to frame Fallen Sword II as a continuation of the series’ legacy rather than a replacement for the original. The browser-based Fallen Sword will continue to run, while the new game aims to introduce Erildath to players who never experienced the 2000s browser MMO scene.

And of course, this comes just a few weeks after the news that Fallen Sword‘s biggest rival in the accessible MMO market, Guild Wars, has been reissued in updated format.
Fallen Sword II is now available to wishlist on Steam, with mobile versions planned for iOS and Android ahead of its 2026 release.
For veterans who remember checking timers, managing stamina, and coordinating guild events in a browser tab, this is a surprisingly substantial return for one of the quiet success stories of online RPG history.
