Nintendo has added Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance to its Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics line-up, making the long-requested tactical RPG playable via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Originally released on the GameCube in 2005, Path of Radiance is best known for introducing Ike, who later became one of the Fire Emblem series’ most recognisable characters. Set on the continent of Tellius, the game is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s strongest entries, thanks to its story-driven campaign and more deliberate, weighty approach to turn-based combat.

Its arrival on Nintendo Switch Online is significant, as it unlocks a game that is usually only available for upwards of around £150.

A long-overdue return

For years, revisiting Path of Radiance meant relying on original hardware or paying premium prices for second-hand copies. Its arrival on Switch Online finally makes the game accessible on the Nintendo Switch 2, without the usual hurdles.

The GameCube version arrives intact, complete with voiced cutscenes, 3D battle maps, and classic Fire Emblem mechanics — including permadeath, where fallen units are gone for good. It’s a reminder of a slower, more methodical era of the series, and one that many fans still prefer.

The release also comes with a small bonus, as Path of Radiance’s soundtrack has been added to Nintendo’s music service, allowing fans to revisit its memorable score outside the game.

What it means for GameCube classics

Path of Radiance joining the Switch Online library strengthens Nintendo’s growing GameCube catalogue and raises hopes for more hard-to-access titles making the jump to modern platforms. The GameCube catalogue was tricky enough to complete for people who owned the console itself, never mind everyone else! Just remember that this is only accessible on a Switch 2 — the original Nintendo Switch cannot handle GameCube emulation.

For retro RPG fans, this is a significant addition — and one that has been a long time coming. We hope for more revived Nintendo GameCube titles soon.
