Mega Cat Studios and Refresh Games have confirmed the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for a new chicken-based platform game, Flap Happy. If successful, the game will be released on digital format (a demo has been released) for NES emulators, along with physical carts for the NES and Game Boy if you choose the correct tier.3
Described as the “world’s first 8-Bit Avian Roguelike Platformer!”, Flap Happy‘s main challenge is gravity. After all, chickens aren’t known for their flight…
Your ultimate goal is to guide Flappy through the mysterious and dangerous mazes and land on all of the five platforms to activate the exit platform. A successful landing on each of these platforms grants you bonus points, as well as a speed bonus for completing each level.
Developer Ryan Carson (@refreshgamesdev) says:
This is my first NES game I’ve written from start to finish in assembly language and it’s been quite the journey, learning some of the intricacies of the NES, memory locations, timing and, well, what makes it actually work.
Prior to this I have made a fair number of gameboy homebrew games, including a fun lil shmup called Infinitron, which just snuck into 32kb, just like the amount of space for Flap Happy.
At the time of publishing, the campaign has surpassed its £11,828 goal, with £12,431 pledged and 24 days still to go.
We’re told the game features are as follows:
- 8-Bit Avian Roguelike: Immerse yourself in the nostalgia of classic 8-Bit graphics as you take on the role of Little Flappy, facing gravity, sharks, and various hazards.
- Procedural Randomization: Experience the thrill of unpredictability with procedurally generated levels, ensuring that each gameplay session is a unique and challenging adventure through over 900 levels.
- High Score Bragging Rights: Compete with friends and fellow winged adventurers for the top spot on the leaderboards. Prove your flapping skills and earn the ultimate bragging rights.
The various tiers include eveyrthing from soundtracks to physical carts and even actual chickens. It looks great, and we’re sure Flap Happy will do well – find out more on the project’s Kickstarter page.
