If you had told me in 1990-whatever that in 30+ years’ time I would be the owner of not just a Game Boy, but a Game Boy Color, I would have thought you crazy. Not because I didn’t see the value of keeping hold of tech – I still have a VIC-20! – but because I didn’t really ““get” Nintendo.
Here we are though, not with one Game Boy Color story, but three – plus some Game Boy news too.
Let’s kick it off!

Game Boy Color horror compilation: Metamorphosis Collection
There has never been a Game Boy Color horror compilation – until now. The Metamorphosis Collection is from Incube8 Games, and features three original horror games on one cartridge—Specimen 134, Decline, and Opossum Country (winner of the SCREAM FM game jam).
Two physical are available; the standard option and the Halloween 2024 special edition with the red cart if you order before the witching hour. A digital copy is available, along with a free demo of Specimen 134.
Take a look at the trailer:
Featuring immersive storylines with psychological and physical transformation themes, atmospheric pixel art for GB and GBC consoles, and original soundtracks, these unique games should set the scene for Halloween this year.
ModRetro to publish Project S-11 to Chromatic
Chromatic, a Game Boy FPGA device much like the Analogue Pocket (but cheaper) is the target device for a release of Paragon 5’s Project S-11 shooter. Originally released on the GBC, this version – released through ModRetro – will work on classic handhelds and the Chromatic alike.
This classic shmup pits you across 8 levels, with 20 enemy craft and bosses to beat with power ups. All the way through, one of the best 8-bit soundtracks of the era can be enjoyed.
Project S-11 is retailing for $45 – learn more on ModRetro’s website.
Game Boy Color demake of Fable
Most game anniversaries come and go. Fable, 20 this year, is not one of them. As an anniversary tribute, a demake of Fable is in the early stages of assembly by James Grice.
Using the GB Studio software, Grice has built up a demo of the game’s first level, set in Oakvale.
On a Reddit post, he states “The game is playable in browser on the itch link below you can also download the rom directly and run it on an emulator or on real Gameboy Color hardware.”
This looks good enough to go somewhere, so keep an eye on this. Head to Grice’s Itch.io to download your copy of the Fable demake.
Yoshi’s Egg DS found
It was recently reported that Pokemon developer GameFreak suffered a cyber attack, resulting in a considerable volume of leaked data. One outcome of this is that a DS version of Yoshi’s Egg has been discovered.
🚨BREAKING🚨: An unreleased 2007 remake of ‘Yoshi’s Egg’ developed by GameFreak was built in what would become Pokémon Black and White’s engine.
Found in the B&W source code leak, enjoy over 20 minutes of never-before-seen gameplay!

Apparently the game was built in an engine that was eventually used for Pokemon: Black & White. The opening screen says 1995, which suggests the DS version was intended to be a port of the cancelled SNES game.
I wouldn’t advocate trying to track it down…
Game over!
I’ll be honest, writing about any classic Nintendo platforms takes me way out of my comfort zone. However, I think these are good stories. The Halloween offer for the Metamorphosis Collection is particularly enticing.
