Now, I don’t know about you, but I find organizing retro game boxes to be one of the toughest aesthetic tasks going.

It’s all very well having the right shelves, but how do you make the games look good on them? This isn’t wholly about alphabetical order or grouping by publisher or machine. You could very easily place all of your games on shelves in your retro cave, have them in a brand-new order that libraries around the world would sit up and take notice of, but if they look untidily pushed to the back of the shelves, no one will care.

Retro collector Lord_Arse! has shared the secret of how his collection of retro games, videos, and other media are displayed on a set of IKEA Billy units. Straightforward enough, you might say.

But there is a secret to making them all sit close to the front edge of the shelf for that classic library look…

I don’t know about you, but I really wish I’d thought of this. Double layering media is almost a default option, but it looks untidy, invariably ends up with mixed items, and you can easily forget where you put something.

Adding 75mm pipe into the mix isn’t the only solution — I know of someone who uses baked bean tins, which helps his prepping tendencies too — but I think it is the most practical I’ve seen so far.

Check out the full thread for details, and if you’re on X, give Lord_Arse! a follow.
