This one sounds right up my alley. I’m always interested when a horror game promises to move beyond cheap jumpscares and focus on genuine atmosphere and psychological dread. APEX GAME STUDIOS LTD. has just announced the official global release of their new title, Spirit Catcher 93’, and it’s available now on the Epic Games Store.

This is described as a visceral psychological horror experience that invites players to descend into a claustrophobic, narrative-driven environment where tension and reality-bending terror are the main events.

It’s the latest in a number of retro-styled horror games, and this one is just in time for Halloween…

Your mental state is the weapon (and the target)

The game’s focus is on a deeply unsettling atmosphere and the devolving mental state of the protagonist. This sounds like it borrows the best elements of classic psychological horror while using modern mechanics to ratchet up the tension.

The key feature that caught my attention is the Sanity System: this is a core mechanic where the protagonist’s mental state directly impacts the gameplay, visuals, and audio. When the line between the real and the spectral is constantly blurred, the reliability of what you see and hear becomes the ultimate challenge.

Spirit Catcher 93’ features

Other features that build up this promise of pure dread include:

  • Immersive 3D Terror: Detailed, claustrophobic environments designed to maximize that unsettling feeling.
  • Narrative Psychological Focus: A dark, complex story that explores heavyweight themes of trauma, reality, and ancient terror.
  • Atmospheric Soundscape: It uses localized 3D audio design engineered specifically to maximize tension and dread. If they pull this off, you’ll definitely need headphones for the full experience.

If you’re ready to have your sanity tested by an ancient, psychological terror, Spirit Catcher 93’ is available for purchase on the Epic Games Store right now. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
