Digging out an old Sega console? Here are the 5 Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games to get hold of first.

If you’re a fan of retro gaming, and you’ve never picked up a Mega Drive controller before, you’re in for a treat. The Mega Drive (otherwise known as the Genesis for our US readers) was a hugely popular console throughout the 90s, and had a library of games that are still enjoyed by fans today.

But with so many games to choose from, where should you start? We’ve rounded up a list of some of the best Mega Drive games for retro newbies to help you get started.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog

It’s impossible to create a list of Mega Drive games without mentioning Sonic the Hedgehog. This blue, spiky-haired mascot of Sega is still one of the most iconic characters in gaming, and Sonic’s first outing on the Mega Drive is one of the best games in his franchise.

Race against the clock to collect rings, avoid traps, and defeat the evil Dr. Robotnik, you can’t miss this platforming classic.

Not everyone is a fan of Sonic, but his long-term impact on gaming and beyond cannot be understated.

2. Streets of Rage 2

If you enjoy beat ’em up games, Streets of Rage 2 should be at the top of your list. This game allows you to choose from a team of protagonists who are fighting against a corrupt criminal organization. Streets of Rage 2 stands out as one of the Mega Drive’s best games, with addictive gameplay, excellent soundtracks, and memorable boss battles.

3. Gunstar Heroes

Fast-paced and futuristic, Gunstar Heroes is a top-down shooter that’s perfect for gamers who want to fly by the seat of their pants. Choose between four different upgradeable weapons, mix-and-match to create new weapons, and battle through waves of enemies to save the world. Gunstar Heroes is reminiscent of a few other titles, but is a classic in its own right and definitely stands the test of time.

4. Golden Axe

Golden Axe combines the best of fantasy, fighting, and walking to create an experience that’s unique and fun. It’s also pretty close to the arcade version.

You can choose three characters – Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead – each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Explore the world to fight monsters, beat bosses, and make your way to Death Adder on a mission of revenge.

The Mega Drive/Genesis version of Golden Axe is probably the best conversion, making this a must-have console experience.

5 Phantasy Star IV

Phantasy Star IV is considered by many to be one of the best RPGs ever made, with almost 10 hours of gameplay.

It has a great story, memorable characters, and introduces a number of innovations in the genre that have gone on to be popular in other games. This game is the perfect introduction to the RPG genre and will have you hook line and sinker.
