ModRetro unveils the M64 — a transparent, N64-style console that already looks more authentic than the Analogue 3D
ModRetro has quietly lifted the lid on its next big project: the M64, a new retro-inspired console built in the unmistakable silhouette of the Nintendo 64 — and frankly, it already looks more like an N64 than Analogue’s sleek-but-somewhat-detached Analogue 3D.
Details are scarce, but we do know three things for certain:
- It exists.
- It’s transparent.
- And it looks absolutely fantastic.
It does, of course, come with a whiff of controversy.
Three colours, all transparent
The M64 will launch in three clear-bodied variants:
- Clear Yellow – channelling peak “Atomic Purple sibling energy”
- Clear Purple – practically begging for Mario Kart 64 sessions
- Clear White – a clean, crystalline look that feels very late-’90s peripherals catalogue
All three models feature a shell that deliberately imitates the N64’s iconic curves, cartridge slot placement, front controller ports, and top ventilation. The design language is unmistakable; this isn’t “inspired by”, this is bordering on spiritual re-creation (with enough differences, of course, to stand on its own).
Similarly, the classic N64 controller design has been adopted, with the same three clear bodied colour schemes.
What we don’t know (yet)
ModRetro is staying quiet on the important bits. No specs, no compatibility list, no release date, and no confirmation on whether the system will run original cartridges, FPGA accuracy, emulation, or something more unusual.
What we have right now is the design reveal, and that alone has already made a splash.
A very deliberate contrast with Analogue
Analogue’s upcoming Analogue 3D is sleek, sharp-edged, muted, modern — an interpretation rather than a recreation. The M64 is the opposite: if you squint, you could mistake it for an actual late-’90s Nintendo product. And for nostalgia-driven collectors, that’s a major selling point.
ModRetro’s pitch so far
The official page for the white variant is now live: modretro.com/pages/m64-white — you should sign up there for updates.
But for now? That’s it. No trailer, no numbers, no deep dive. Just a trio of deliciously transparent shells and a promise of more to come…
