Retro platforming fans, get ready to raid some ancient ruins — Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition is officially swinging onto Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on December 10, 2025.
Originally released back in 1984, Montezuma’s Revenge is one of those classic names that pops up in conversations about early platformers but, let’s be honest, not everyone’s actually played it. (I’m in that camp, and I’m itching to change that with this new edition — especially the Switch physical release, which looks like the perfect collector’s item.)
Montezuma’s Revenge: 1980s classic reborn
Created by Robert Jaeger, Montezuma’s Revenge was one of the first multi-room platformers, mixing exploration, puzzle-solving, and deadly precision jumping long before Metroid or Prince of Persia hit the scene. Now, Jaeger’s back to expand and remaster his own creation, turning it into a 100-room adventure with new visuals, new playable characters, and a faithful nod to its original challenge.
The 40th Anniversary Edition shifts things into 2.5D, with widescreen HD graphics and a reimagined visual style that still respects the old-school layout. You’ll be dodging traps, collecting treasures, unlocking doors with color-coded keys, and generally testing your reflexes — the way nature (and 1980s developers) intended.
Pedro or Rosita — take your pick!
This time, you can play as either Pedro, the original explorer, or his sister Rosita, who joins the adventure for the first time. Both must leap and climb through a maze of deadly rooms packed with spikes, snakes, and swinging hazards. It’s a throwback that somehow feels right at home on modern systems.
And for the purists: the original pixel version of the game — newly expanded and completed as a Director’s Cut — is included. On PC, it’s part of the Deluxe Edition bundle on Steam. But if you’re springing for the Nintendo Switch physical Limited Edition, you’ll also get that classic version on a Montezuma-branded USB drive. Now that’s the kind of bonus that deserves a spot on the shelf next to your boxed copy of Spelunker HD.
I wanted 8-bit graphics…
With so many 1980s titles being dusted off and remastered lately (such as Boulder Dash), Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition feels like one that should have been around sooner. But I would have liked to see an option to play with 8-bit graphics.
Pricing and availability
Digital editions will cost $14.99 / €14.99, with a 10% launch discount available right after release. Meanwhile, the Switch physical edition can already be pre-ordered from Playasia, shipping to coincide with the December 10 digital launch, and the game has been available on Steam since earlier this year.
