Mr Run and Jump will be the first Atari cartridge since 1990.

In a shock move, Atari has announced the release of its first cartridge for the 2600 console in decades. Set for release in July 2023, the Mr Run and Jump cart is the latest example of the company mining its retro credentials.

While an alternative, modern, and different game is scheduled for release on Steam and other platforms, it’s important not to confuse the two titles. While there are some basic similarities, they’re different games. The Atari 2600 version is official described as follows:

Arcade platforming action returns to its roots with an exciting announcement: the unveiling of an Atari 2600 version of the recently revealed adventure-platformer, Mr. Run and Jump. This official release marks a significant milestone steeped in retro history: the first cartridge launch for a new Atari title since 1990!

It seems the Atari 2600 version will stick to the basics, mixing 2600-style graphics and gameplay. It’s basically about running and jumping, as you can see in this GIF:

Physical Atari 2600 carts are occasionally still issued, but this is the first from Atari since 1990. We expect the cartridge to slot nicely into an Atari 2600 and its compatible consoles. If you can imagine picking up the Atari joystick and guiding Mr RUn and Jump himself through the levels, this game is probably for you

This limited edition game is released on July 31st, 2023. Available for $59.99 (no UK price available at the time of writing), keep an eye on the Mr Run and Jump page for details.
