I’m really impressed with how the 8BitDo Arcade Controller looks, and that NES variant is really nice to look at…

Retro controller specialist 8BitDo has announced the release of its Arcade Controller this summer, available in Xbox and NES variants. This wireless controller board comes in two variants:

The FGC (Fighting Game Community) is the main target for this controller. Consequently, it can be configured for use on all manner of fighting games. It has programmable buttons, ideal for remapping for different games, postures, and scenarios. This should make complex fighting combos easier to perform, adding a level of precision to games. Also included — along with a 2.4G wireless adapter — are four flat lock caps to replace buttons that are not required.

Measuring 1.6cm thick, the 8BitDo Arcade Controller notably has no joystick or thumbsticks. (There is an alternative 8BitDo Arcade Stick that has been around for a while). It’s around the size of a sheet of A4 paper, and retains charge for up to 40 hours. A rechargeable Li-ion battery is inside, and a USB-C charging port is found on the right edge of the controller.

Should you get the 8BitDo Arcade Controller?

While I’m not a huge fan of fighting games, several of our contributors are, as our review of King of Fighters ’98 demonstrates. So, I’ll have to hold judgement on what a device like this can actually bring to gaming… except for that obvious advantage of having a ton of buttons to mash.

(That’s how you guys play fighting games, right…?)

The 8BitDo Arcade Controller range is slated for shipping from July 15, 2025 across North America, and from August 15, 2025 across Europe. Pricing isn’t too bad — the standard version (the one that looks like you should use it on your NES) expected to retail for €89.99 / £74.99 while the officially licensed Xbox version should retail for €99.99 / £84.99.
