Enhancements to the Nintendo 64 app on the Nintendo Switch 2 will bring some quality of life benefits to retro gamers.
The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 would inevitably bring some improvements to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack emulation titles. We already know that GameCube titles will be arriving on the Switch 2, and now Nintendo has confirmed that some enhancements will be coming to its Nintendo 64 library.
What’s new in the Nintendo 64 app?
On the official Nintendo website’s guide to new features in Nintendo Switch Online with the Switch 2, they’ve confirmed:
You’ll find new features waiting for you in the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app on Nintendo Switch 2! These include a new CRT filter to add a retro feel to your games, button remapping for each game’s controls, and a Rewind feature in case you want to turn back time and undo a mistake.

So, that’s:
- CRT filter, something most retro collections on the Switch already have
- Button remapping (presumably per-game, as this feature is already available)
- Rewind, again something most retro collections already offer
These are great enhancements, but it would be good to see the same features rolled out on the original Switch.
Will you be buying the Nintendo Switch 2?
I have long believed that the Nintendo Switch is the best retro gaming device around in terms of accessibility and ease-of-use. The Switch 2 could beat this.
While I was initially planning to buy the Switch 2, the price point (even before the Trump tariffs) for the device and the games have left me thinking again. In my opinion, the pricing of the Switch 2 games could fall flat.
