New Taito Space Invaders Collection for Nintendo Switch Seems Expensive

Last Updated on August 15, 2021

We received an email a few days ago about the new Space Invaders collection for Nintendo Switch.

It looks interesting, although something is niggling me.

Space Invaders attained its iconic status in the video game history through the times in the game arcades. And until today, people know the invaders not only from the ever growing video game series but also as a part of pop culture. To celebrate this icon in gaming history, fans of the brand can now get 11 masterpieces from the arcade expert TAITO in one great collection, featuring awesome games from 1978 to 2018.

Titled Space Invaders Invincible Collection, it includes 11 games (10+1 in the PR guff) which seems like it could be good value until you check the actual list…To be fair, there are some less than honorary inclusions in the Space Invaders pantheon here, as well as a key omission.

In this compilation you get:

  • Space Invaders (1978, Arcade) – b/w
  • Space Invaders (1978, Arcade) – colour
  • Space Invaders Part II (1979, Arcade)
  • Lunar Rescue (1979, Arcade)
  • Space Cyclone (1980, Arcade)
  • Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV (1990, Arcade)
  • Super Space Invaders ’91 (1990, Arcade)
  • Space Invaders DX (1994, Arcade)
  • Space Invaders Extreme (2008)
  • Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE (2018)

And included as additional download:

  • Arkanoid vs Space Invaders (2016)

Tempting, you might say. But then we watched the trailer, and… well, 10+1 sounds impressive doesn’t it? Until you remember that the collection is £50. To top things off, there is no Space Invaders Frenzy, which is perhaps the most fun you can have with an alien invasion in the 21st century.

Publishers ININ have potentially got a hit on their hands with this game, but it is almost certain that this Space Invaders Nintendo Switch collection is priced too high. After all, some of the included games aren’t fantastic. And yes, it is a collection of 11 games, but will some of them aren’t exactly legendary.

What would the right price be? Probably the £34.99 that is almost certainly going to hit within sx weeks of launch. Good luck to them, regardless!
