An open source build of the original Fallout is now available to play. This is an up-to-date, fully functional version of the original game, albeit one that has been reverse engineered.

However, because the “genuine” Fallout isn’t open source, you will need to play this version with the original game assets. That means owning the original version of the game.

Here’s the tweet, by developer Adam Lacko:

As you go about your day, I’d like to bring to your attention that Fallout Community Edition, an open source Fallout game, was released today. You owe your prayers to Alex Batalov, the creator, and our champion.

A subsequent tweet notes:

For those wondering what exactly this project is, it’s a reverse-engineered source code of the original Fallout engine (a separate project called Fallout Reference Edition) rewritten in C++ and enhanced to run natively on mutliple platforms.

As mentioned in the tweet, the game will run on Android as well as PC. As stated in the GitHub project ReadMe, the original game can be bought on GOG or Steam.

The game will run on Windows, Linux, and macOS, as well as Android and iOS. All require the Windows version as a base, with various step then required to import the new executable, and run the open source Fallout. Note that a mouse is required to play the game on mobile.
