Thanks to coder Ryan Dwyer, Rare’s N64 classic title Perfect Dark has now been decompiled for PC, making it available for modding.
Having previously worked on the NTSC version and a re-release that rectified bugs, Dwyer has opened up the gates of possibility for this game, where PC players can have a go at sharpening visuals and pursuing gameplay in new directions.
According to VGC, other renowned N64 titles have also received the PC treatment. These include Super Mario 64, decompiled back in 2019, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time earlier this year. The beloved Mario game went a whole ‘180’ and was transformed into a first-person horror game with complete ray-traced graphics. Ocarina of Time, being the first 3D title in the series, was given enhanced visuals and 60FPS.
Perfect Dark has a 97% decompiling status, but we’re told the remaining 3% is nothing to worry about.
These ongoing projects just go to show that gamers are constantly re-shaping the video games we know and love, whether its improving aesthetics, or to change up the theme of the game entirely!
