Raiden IV x Mikado has just released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Steam. Previous gen versions are also available.

When it comes to vertical scrolling shooters, the Raiden games are legendary and comfortably rub shoulders with other greats like Strikers 19XX and Ikaruga.

This new title is a remake of the 2007 arcade classic and comes with a slew of upgrades, including new levels, modes, and bullet patterns.

One standout addition is the Boss Rush mode. I love this as it lets you practice the most challenging parts of each stage so you can dish out a killer score the next time you play. If you’re into high-score hunting, there’s a leaderboard where you can throw down with the best players on the planet.

The original has superb music in its own right, but the “x Mikado” part of the title pertains to the revamped soundtrack. Mikado Game Centre has remixed the entire soundtrack for Raiden IV, including live performances. If you’re a purist and prefer the original, you can freely switch between them.

Remakes can be hit-and-miss, but Raiden IV x Mikado is full of features that offer much more than a shiny coat of paint. If you’re a fan of shoot ’em ups and the arcade scene, this one may be worth your time.
