A retro-style arcade shooter by NGDEV, responsible for Kraut Buster and Gunlord X, is being ported to the Nintendo Switch on 11th May and it has many exciting features and various gameplay modes.
Gunvein saw its initial release on PC (Steam) in November 2022 with Xbox and PS4 ports arriving later this year. The game will soon land on the Switch eShop. From the trailer, we can see that this game will get you caught up in some chaotic shooting goodness. The incredible and thrilling mayhem of this game is inspired by the renowned works of Taito, CAVE and Raizing/8ing.
The aim of the game is to stun and overwhelm your enemies and gain the upper hand with your attacks as much as you possibly can. After a rapid round, you obtain resources used to improve you power up shot for a limited time, or activate a screen clearing Bomb. Unlike other arcade games where numbers usually rack up a score, this game transfers it as lives and currency to use at the in-game shop.
The game includes a selection of modes to choose from for the hardcore score busters to the casual, chilled out players. They consist of:
- Arcade Mode – With 1 credit, take the game as far as you can and upload your highest scores to online leaderboards.
- Standard Mode – This one has a nice balance of challenge and ease of learning and building up skills as you go along. You can reach checkpoints regularly and fair use of the shop system,
- Roguelike Arrange Mode – Explore the games 5 stages in various different ways! Quick thinking, decision making and skill are key in this mode.
- Classic – You begin with a weak ship and eventually level up as you fight foes. There’s the option to mix and match abilities and upgrade ship stats your way!
- Minimal – Not far off from Arcade Mode but allows you to play the whole game with one of the 3 ships.
There are extra challenges and tutorials to go through too including the Online Leaderboard and Convenient Practice Tools if you’re new to this style of gameplay. There are 3 characters you can play as with distinct abilities and attributes. The characters and ships (in brackets) are:
- Type A (Bagon) – Riko uses rhythmic combat movements that make the Bagon dance around enemies with speed and power. With a colossal black hole bomb and cone lock-on, this character and their ship destroy enemies with precision.
- Type B (Damul) – Miko controls Damul which possesses efficient movements and wider use of space. Enemies can be targeted no matter where you are on screen meaning that Miko’s strength is in defence. There’s full screen lock-on and a destructive laser beam.
- Type C (Gunex) – Lizzy is a young prodigy piloting Gunex, an experimental ship that relies on strategy and planning to surprise enemies with bomb blasts and a stronger version of Bagon’s lasers.
