A cool looking Android handheld for retro gaming and a bunch of retro game announcements, just for you…
Barely an hour goes by without some new retro gaming news dropping into my inbox. It really is incredible that games and systems released up to 50 years ago are still generating interest. Meanwhile, titles on the latest hardware have arguably peaked, and massive budgets for AAA games are being cut.
In short: retro gaming is where it’s at. With that in mind, here’s a roundup of the latest retro hardware, merch, and gaming news.
- ZPG A1 Unicorn is a new pocket sized Android handheld. This retro console is currently available only on AliExpress.
- Classic issues of Game Informer have been uploaded to RetroMags. Here’s issue 1.
- By strange coincidence, GameStop has killed Game Informer.
- Nintendo fans are trying to relaunch Satellaview as Satellaview+, and beam SNES games into your living room. They’re looking for homebrew games.
- Arcade Archives Tecmo Stackers announced for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, originally released in 1995.
- A Ghostbusters II mod has been released by fans for the 2009 title Ghostbusters: The Video Game
- Chocolate Doom v3.1.0 has been released with some new features for the open source DOOM port. These include better Steam support for Linux, improved gamepad support, and smoother online play. See the GitHub release notes for more.
- The SEGA Saturn version of Resident Evil has been dubbed into Spanish.
- Available later this year, the RIKI 8Bit GAME Collection for Nintendo Switch gives fans of Japanese dev RIKI a collection of four games. At present, this is believed to be a Japan-only release.
Finally, something particularly intriguing. New Atlas features a fascinating look at the SEGA Jet Rocket, a 1970s arcade flight sim with no computer, and no monitor. This might seem insane to you, but way back in 1991 I tried a pilot training simulator at an airshow. It had no monitor, and I was told at the time, no actual computer.
Now I’m left wondering if SEGA’s game influenced these training systems in some way…
