The Scorpion Engine has been used to build a remastered and updated version of Rick Dangerous for SEGA 16-bit systems.

I’ll be honest, I always preferred the way Rick Dangerous looked to how it played. I found the game — a platform adventure on the Amiga (also out on Atari ST, Acorn Archimedes, and the usual 8-bit systems) to be a touch tougher than I wanted it to be. Certainly too tricky to put too much time into.

I always preferred strategy games.

Rick Dangerous, of course, owed a lot to Indiana Jones. But as there were several Indy games on the Amiga, I suspect my feelings were along the lines of “I’ll play the real thing.” Without Indiana Jones games on the Amiga, I suspect I’d have put more time into Rick Dangerous.

But the new SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis port of Rick Dangerous DX is now available, a smart recreation by Z-Team of Core Designs’ original but using graphics based on the Nintendo Wii homebrew version, and built on the Scorpion Engine. It’s also related to Z-Team’s own enhanced version of Rick Dangerous for the Amiga.

You can see how well this conversion has turned out:

Highlights of the game’s production are:

  • All graphics remastered by Domkid (from Wii Version)
  • Brand new title screen ( 2018 Original illustration by Simon Phipps)
  • Build with Scorpion Engine by Domkid (Z-Team)
  • Special thanks to Earok  for the amazing  Scorpion Engine and his support
  • Thanks to Troudki (Z-Team) , the King of Vaporware)

You can get a copy of on a pay-what-you-want arrangement on the project’s Itch.io page. If you’re planning to take a look at either version of Rick Dangerous, please consider supporting the developers with a contribution. They’ve done a great job with these remakes, and deserve our full appreciation.
