Six ZX Spectrum games are part of a 12-game collection of Rare classics, timed to coincide with the developer’s 40th anniversary.

Classic video game company Ultimate Play The Game, who later became Rare, was responsible for a selection of visually striking hits on 8-bit systems. Titles include Sabre Wulf and Knight Lore (two particular favourites of mine), along with Atic Atac. Primarily released on ZX Spectrum, these titles would also be released on C64, BBC Micro, Amstrad, and others.

Today, to coincide with Rare’s 40th anniversary, Blaze Entertainment has announced a new collection of Rare games for Evercade. Comprising 12 titles, the collection features six Spectrum games, a first for Evercade.

Games on Rare Collection 1

The full list of Rare classics you will be able to play on Evercade is as follows:

  • Atic Atac (Spectrum)
  • Gunfright (Spectrum)
  • Jetpac (Spectrum)
  • Knight Lore (Spectrum)
  • Lunar Jetman (Spectrum)
  • Sabre Wulf (Spectrum)
  • Underwurlde (C64)
  • Cobra Triangle (8-bit console)
  • C. Pro-Am (8-bit console)
  • Battletoads (8-bit console)
  • Conker’s Pocket Tales (Handheld)
  • Battletoads Arcade (Arcade)

“Rare’s early games represent an incredible legacy of experimentation and charm,” we’re told by Blaze Entertainment Ltd’s CEO, Andrew Byatt. “From their earliest Spectrum titles to their later arcade and handheld hits, Rare Collection 1 is our tribute to their evolution and an exciting way for new and old fans alike to rediscover these classics.”

These days, Rare is owned by Microsoft, but along the way produced a selection of top-tier titles, including — but not limited to — GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64.

The Rare Collection 1 for Evercade and Super Pocket devices is scheduled for release in November 2025, with pre-orders opening on September 30th, and has an RRP of £19.99, $29.99, and €24.99, depending on whether you’re in the UK, USA, or EU.
