Right then you lovely lot, dust off your controllers and prepare for a proper blast from the past (with a shiny new coat of paint!). During the recent Nintendo Direct, Square Enix pulled a bit of a surprise on us and announced that SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW!
Yes, you read that correctly. The beloved 1999 RPG, a proper gem from the PlayStation era, has been given a gorgeous HD makeover and is ready to grace your Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC via Steam (and it’s Steam Deck Verified, no less!), as well as your iOS and Android devices.
For those of you who remember the original, you’ll recall the compelling intertwined stories of Gustave, the royal heir battling for his place, and Wil, the intrepid excavator facing down some seriously nasty hidden threats. Now, you can relive their adventures with a whole host of spiffing new features.
How has SaGa Frontier 2 been improved?
Square Enix hasn’t just slapped a fresh coat of paint on this classic, oh no. They’ve gone the extra mile with:
- Stunning HD Visuals: That distinctive watercolour art style we all loved? It’s been sharpened up beautifully, with more vibrant colours and those iconic character sprites looking crisper than a fresh bag of crisps. Even better, characters who were missing unique sprites back in the day now have their own!
- A Spruced-Up User Interface: Navigating menus and keeping track of the story’s timeline (remember the History Choice system?) should be a much smoother experience thanks to a complete UI overhaul. No more squinting at tiny text, thankfully!
- Brand New Story Content: Under the watchful eye of SaGa guru Akitoshi Kawazu, writer Benny Matsuyama has penned new story events to flesh out the narrative even further. Prepare for some extra insight into the world of SaGa Frontier 2!
- Fresh Gameplay Features: We’re talking Parameter Inheritance, juicy post-game content to sink your teeth into, and the ever-welcome New Game+ mode. Sounds like plenty to keep us occupied!
- A Proper Treat for Western Fans: Remember the PocketStation? Probably not if you were over here! But fear not, because the Japan-exclusive PocketStation excavation minigame, “Dig! Dig! Digger,” is finally playable in the West for the very first time in this remaster! How brilliant is that?
