Sega Announces a Mega Drive Mini 2, Runs Mega CD Games

Last Updated on June 4, 2022

During a Japanese Sega live stream, the Mega Drive Mini 2 has been announced, a shrunk down version of the original Mega Drive 2 with 50 games, that can also play Mega CD titles.

The Sega Mega Drive 2 was a smaller, lighter version of the Mega Drive/Genesis released in 1993 (known simply as “Genesis” in the USA, with no Sega prefix). In some areas its release may have gone unnoticed, as it didn’t really do anything different to its predecessor and came out around the same time as the Sega CDX/Multi-Mega, a model that combined Sega’s Mega-CD with the Mega Drive/Genesis.

Today’s announcement from Sega has come somewhat out of the blue, and full details about the Mega Drive 2 Mini are yet to be confirmed. But we do know from the video above what it looks like and what titles it will ship with.

These are the ten Mega Drive Mini 2 games that have been announced so far:

  • Silpheed (Mega CD)
  • Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
  • Sonic CD (Mega CD)
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
  • Popful Mail (Mega CD)
  • Virtua Racing (Mega Drive)
  • Bonanza Bros (Mega Drive)
  • Shining in the Darkness (Mega Drive)
  • Thunder Force IV (Mega Drive)
  • Magical Taruruto (Mega Drive)
  • Fantasy Zone (new Mega Drive port)

Here’s a look at the full announcement video, which was live streamed on YouTube.
