Apparently, SEGA isn’t Forever. It appears that the SEGA Forever series of retro games released on mobile platforms is being retired, with titles delisted from Play and the App Store.

First issued in 2017, the library of classic SEGA titles includes Altered Beast, Space Harrier 2, and Golden Axe Classics. Of those titles, only the Golden Axe collection remains. As you can see from the image above, SEGA’s mobile offering is largely Sonic the Hedgehog-based.

At this point, the delisted games are:

  • Comix Zone
  • Altered Beast
  • Phantasy Star Classics
  • Revenge of Shinobi
  • Vectorman
  • Decap Attack
  • Eswat
  • Ristar
  • Space Harrier 2
  • Beyond Oasis
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • After Burner Climax

At this stage, all is not lost. These games continue to have a presence – removal is probably a slower process – which you can find via the SEGA Forever website.

While this entire affair may be simply a case of SEGA rearranging its mobile focus, the guys at toucharcade have spotted “end of service” messages on some titles. Meanwhile, Time Extension reckons it could be part of a fat cutting exercise by SEGA.

It appears to be an ignominious end to classic SEGA games on mobile – for the time being, at least.
