SEGA announces new Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi games are coming.
First Atari, and now SEGA: the once-time gaming has decided now is the time to revive its classic franchises. While Atari is mining the archive for new takes on forgotten and lost old titles (for example, Akka Arrh) and ignoring the classics (say, Pac-Man), SEGA’s approach is more mainstream.
New versions of Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi have been rumoured for a while. Earlier this year, the company was polling gamers to establish which classic franchises they were most famililar with.
Announced at The Gaming Awards 2023, SEGA’s upcoming collection of modernised classics were revealed in a special trailer.
Check out the SEGA trailer (stay with it, there is footage eventually):
So, when you can expect to play these games, and which platforms will they land on? We’re going to stick our necks out and suggest you’ll be waiting until 2024 at least for these five games. Also, if you want to play a new Jet Set Radio or Crazy Taxi or Golden Axe or whatever, a Nintendo Switch or a PS4/5 is your best bet.
“In recent years, Sonic the Hedgehog has forged new paths for SEGA, bringing the franchise to life and reaching new audiences in ways we had only dreamed of in the past. Building off that success, we are digging into our legacy and reimagining several franchises to bring these games to more audiences around the globe,” says Co-COO of Sega Corporation and CEO of Sega of America, Shuji Utsumi.
“Today’s announcement is just the start of our initiative. First and foremost, our ambition will be to create great games with memorable characters and worlds. We hope fans of all ages will look towards our future with anticipation as we release these projects in the coming years.”
We’ll bring you more information on the remakes as we get it.
