Nightdive Studios, the wizards behind countless classic remasters, have genuinely delivered, but unfortunately some of us are going to miss out.

After the surprise digital drop of The Thing: Remastered last December, they announced the ultimate alien terror in physical form. That’s right, The Thing: Remastered on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 — but it’s already sold out on the Atari store.

With a release date of June 25th – the 43rd anniversary of John Carpenter’s masterpiece – two versions will be available: a Standard Edition ($29.99 / €34.99) and a Deluxe Edition ($49.99 / €54.99) for the truly hardcore fans.

The Thing: Remastered contents

But what if you managed to get one (other retailers are stocking it, keep reading…), or just fancy knowing what you could have had? Let’s break down what’s in the box…

The Thing: Remastered Deluxe Edition:

  • Physical copy of the game
  • Deluxe Edition box
  • Steelbook Case (because, let’s face it, steelbooks are awesome)
  • Key art poster
  • Captain Blake’s ID card replica (a cool collectible!)
  • Sew-on patches (perfect for your retro gaming jacket)

The Thing: Remastered Standard Edition:

  • Physical copy of the game

While the Standard Edition offers a great entry point, the Deluxe Edition is clearly aimed at collectors and die-hard fans of The Thing. That Steelbook alone is worth it!

What is The Thing?

For those unfamiliar, The Thing: Remastered is a faithful recreation of the 2002 third-person survival horror shooter. Nightdive has leveraged their KEX Engine to bring this chilling classic kicking and screaming into the modern era. We’re talking up to 4K resolution at 120FPS on compatible hardware! Think upgraded character models, textures, animations, and enhanced 3D rendering for truly atmospheric lighting. This isn’t just a quick polish; it’s a full-on restoration designed to reignite the fear and paranoia of the original game.

The game itself drops you into the frozen wasteland as Captain J.F. Blake, leading a rescue team to the infamous Outpost #31. What awaits you there? A shape-shifting alien, of course! And it’s not just about blasting monsters; you’ll need to manage your squad’s trust and sanity, because anyone could be infected. Paranoia is your greatest enemy.

Key Features to Watch Out For:

  • Return to Outpost #31: Explore the iconic location and face off against a variety of grotesque creatures.
  • Who Goes There?: Command a squad and try to figure out who (or what) is lurking among them.
  • The Warmest Place to Hide: The shape-shifting alien can imitate anyone, so trust is a fragile thing.
  • Don’t Lose It: Manage your squad’s fear and paranoia, or face the consequences.
  • Ultimate Alien Terror: Nightdive’s enhancements bring the horror to life like never before.
  • Stunning Visuals: Experience the game in glorious 4K at up to 120FPS.

Is The Thing really sold out?

As far as the Atari stock is concerned, yes. However, pre-orders are open at various retailers, including Best Buy, GameStop, GAME, Target, Walmart, and Amazon, where you can pick it up for Switch and PS5. Don’t miss out on adding this piece of retro gaming history to your collection!

While the physical release is exciting, The Thing: Remastered is also available digitally on Steam, GOG, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. No excuses – prepare to face the Thing!
