The world of retro gaming is chock-full of top-down racers, and the pixel-tastic Tiny Racing looks set to drag the multiplayer genre into the 2020s.
One of the first racing games I ever played (if not the first) was the three player Super Sprint arcade unit (a modern sequel, NeoSprint, is available). As a top-down racer, it afforded participants a full view of the track while also enabling some, well gamesmanship (interfering with steering, that sort of thing). I liked it so much that I got the home computer version on Commodore 64, only that turned out to be Championship Sprint. Same idea, but oddly less fun.
Top-down racers got a particular shot in the arm in the Amiga era with Super Cars and Super Cars 2, and while Tiny Racing doesn’t have weapons, it certainly evokes the look of those two-player games.
A look at Tiny Racing
The game’s developer shared this post on X, which includes a video of the game in action.
Better still, at the time of writing, the game is available for a 25% launch discount! Here’s the synopsis:
Gear up for a thrilling ride in Tiny Racing! Dive into a vibrant world of pixel art where you control a variety of vehicles across contrasting and challenging tracks. With intuitive arcade controls, master each turn, drift, and boost to outpace your rivals.
From time trials to full tournaments, every race is a test of skill and strategy. Win cash to purchase new vehicles and become the undisputed champion! Get ready for high-speed excitement and a nostalgic gaming experience in Tiny Racing!Tiny Racing game
In the game you can expect:
- Trucks, drift cars and formula cars!
- Quick race, time trials and 12-race tournaments
- Local multiplayer competition with 2-4 players
- 18 unique tracks over 3 settings both day and night
- Winning races earns money to purchase cool new vehicles
- 4 difficulty modes
While NeoSprint might opt for modern graphics, I think Tiny Racing looks the better retro multiplayer experience.
You can grab the full Tiny Racing game or the demo on Steam now. Steam Deck compatibility is currently “unknown.”
