Rare arcade and Dreamcast title Under Defeat is now available to play on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox platforms, and Nintendo Switch.
Originally released in arcades back in 2005 and later on the Dreamcast, this unique semi-isometric shooter is now available on thanks to a collaboration between Clear River Games and City Connection.
This isn’t just a straight port, either. Retro experts City Connection have brought Under Defeat kicking and screaming into the modern era with some notable enhancements. While purists can enjoy a faithful recreation of the arcade experience in “Arcade Mode,” complete with the original 4:3 aspect ratio and pseudo-vertical screen orientation, there are also options for those who prefer a more contemporary presentation.
“New Order Mode” adapts the game for widescreen displays, offering a 16:9 aspect ratio. But the real draw for veterans and newcomers alike might be “New Order Mode+.” This mode introduces the “WARNING GAUGE,” a new risk/reward mechanic that adds a strategic layer to the classic shmup formula. It’s a clever addition that complements the game’s existing mechanics, like the ability to tilt your shots, without feeling tacked on.
Flying a Helicopter
Under Defeat originally came from the minds at G.rev and stood out with a semi-isometric perspective. Piloting one of four helicopters, players battle across land, sea, and air, taking on everything from tank battalions to colossal warships. The ability to adjust the trajectory of your shots adds a tactical element often missing in simpler shooters, allowing for some creative maneuvering and enemy annihilation.
And let’s not forget the music. The soundtrack, originally composed by Shinji Hosoe (of Ridge Racer and Tekken fame), has been re-arranged by Hosoe and his company, Super Sweep. It’s a welcome update that enhances the game’s already intense atmosphere.
Most of us missed Under Defeat the first time around, so this re-release marks a great opportunity to discover a unique shooter with a lot of long-time fans.
