However, as with any console, some titles, despite their quality, didn’t quite achieve the recognition they deserved. Today, I want to shine a light on a few of those overlooked gems.
1. Gunstar Heroes
Developed by Treasure and released in 1993, Gunstar Heroes is a masterclass in run-and-gun action. It’s puzzling why this game didn’t become a bigger hit. The sheer quality of its graphics, gameplay, and sound design is obvious. You play as Red or Blue, trying to stop an evil empire from getting their hands on powerful gems.
The gameplay is fast and furious, the boss fights are intense, and the weapon system lets you mix and match for crazy combos. It’s a fantastic example of Treasure’s talent, and a must-play for fans of the genre.
2. Comix Zone
Sega Technical Institute’s Comix Zone, released in 1995, offers a truly unique beat ’em up experience. The idea of playing inside a comic book was really original. You control Sketch Turner, a comic book artist trapped in his own creation. The game combines beat ’em up action with puzzle-solving, and you need to use items to get through.
The striking visual style and engaging gameplay make it really addictive.
Interestingly, Comix Zone is one of several Sega titles pulled from Android and iOS.
3. Thunder Force IV
Technosoft’s 1992 shoot ’em up, Thunder Force IV, is a technical marvel. The graphics, the soundtrack, and the challenging gameplay all stand out. You’re a pilot defending the galaxy from aliens. The variety of weapons, power-ups, and tough bosses will keep you busy for hours.
It’s one of the best shoot ’em ups on the Mega Drive.
4. Pulseman
Developed by Game Freak in 1994, Pulseman is a platformer with some really interesting gameplay. You control Pulseman, who can travel through electronic circuits. The inventive idea, along with the nice graphics and catchy music, makes it a fun game.
It shows that Game Freak could make cool games beyond their more famous titles.
5. Toejam & Earl
Johnson-Voorsanger Productions’ Toejam & Earl, released in 1991, is just plain weird and fun. It’s about two alien rappers stranded on Earth, and it’s a mix of exploration and humor. The easygoing gameplay and co-op option make it popular. It has a dedicated fanbase, which has led to sequels and remakes, keeping it relevant.
This is a fun game that can be played alone or with a friend. Various sequels and remakes of Toejam & Earl have been released on later platforms.
